About the South Park Historical Society
Located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, the South Park Community has an abundance of history. South Park Township was established in 1966 but a look at history shows when it really began. In 1788 Allegheny County was formed from parts of Westmoreland and Washington Counties. Among the newly formed townships of Allegheny County were St. Clair and Jefferson, and in 1845 Snowden Township was formed from parts of these two townships. The new township was named for Judge Snowden of Pittsburgh. In 1966, by referendum of the electorate, the name of Snowden Township was changed to South Park. The communities of South Park that have greatly contributed to the growth of our township are Curry, Broughton, Bruceton, Snowden, Windover Hills, Piney Fork, Knothole, and Library. The rich and abundant history of our area includes early settlers, the Whiskey Insurrection, coal mining, Allegheny County Fairs, the Bureau of Mines, historic homesteads, and so much more.
